Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
